A number of you have asked where I've been. Needless to say, the changes in my life have generated a lot of tasks which seem to come in waves. Right now I've been getting my house in order, generating somewhat of a normal social life, and working on both the Sylvester Cemetery Foundation and the East Atlanta Community Association's Transportation Committee. I've also been taking a lot of neighborhood photos which I intend to post to this blog.
I fully intend to shift my priority to blog updates very soon. Be patient. I shall return.
Larry,
I am looking forward to hearing from you again. You have been missed.

I look forward to hearing from you also (and seeing the neighborhood photos). Don't worry - we all know it takes time and energy to post - we'll have patience.

That cemetery is right next to my house... Thanks for being one of the ones that are cleaning it out! (as it so desperately needs to be done)
Now, if we can just get people to stop dumping all around it!!

I grew up on Cavanaugh Avenue at the Flat Shoals Bouldercrest split about a mile from East Atlanta. I too have watched hundreds of movies at the Madison theater. I am having a Cavanaugh Neighborhood reunion with all of us who grew up there from the 40's to the 60's. Do you have any old photographs of this area? Archie of Archie's Army store went to my church at Eastland Road Methodist Church.

Mickey,
There are a good many photos floating around. GSU's Pullen Library photograph collection has digitized quite a few photos of East Atlanta. Hands down the best collection of old photos of the area I know of is the history archives at Martha Brown United Methodist Church, but you'd have to make arrangements as there are no regular hours they are open.

Mickey,
By the way, like hundreds of teenagers in the 1960s (and earlier) I used to drive my car too fast down Cavanaugh to get that airborne effect. I'll bet it thrilled the adult residents no end.

One other thing, Mickey, I'm getting revved up to start blogging again. Do you mind if I take some photos of your gathering? I assume y'all went
to East Atlanta High (and maybe Murphy before East Atlanta opened). I know quite a few people who did. Probably my best friend who went there is Johnny O'Neal. From the Murphy years of that area I know Harriet Corbin and Jerry Langley.

And one other one other thing :-) Are you related to Ricky Gunter?

Larry:
Most of us are probably a little older than you are. We were all born in the early 40's and went to Bouldercrest Elementary School and Southwest Dekalb HS as basically all of Cavanaugh Avenue was in Dekalb County. The "hill" you mentioned was called "thrill" hill. We are having our reunion this Saturday August 10th. If you would like to contact me about it, send me your request to my e-mail address: mgtech@bellsouth.net and I will provide you my telephone #.
