Over the Christmas holidays I spent one day slogging through the woods, dead kudzu, and vine choked hills which constitute much of Atlanta's Hollywood Cemetery at this point. I always thought that properly restored Hollywood would be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Atlanta. It's located on Hollywood Road on the west side of Atlanta, and the winter months are about the only time much of the cemetery is visible and traversable. recently I've begun collecting contact information on people with family members and ancestors buried in Hollywood Cemetery, and hope to play matchmaker to set up a cemetery friends group and cleanup effort.
YOur site "blogs" my mind! It's wonderful. So much material. I lived my first 5 years in downtown Atlanta, at 419 Ponce de Leon--I guess my little house is gone by now, but I saw it in 1979. Keep up your good work. The Archers and Kuykendalls were citizens of Atlanta and Cobb, Cherokee and Habersham counties. Cordially, Rich

Hello,
I grew up in Gresham Park area and also East Atlanta, near Bouldercrest & Fayetteville Rd. I remember the Madison as a kid. Also, have a grandmother buried over in Hollywood Cem. I havent been over that way in years. More afraid than not to go in that area.
Thanks you for your website. What memories..
PS - I am in the Army National Guard so I still go over to Confederate Ave on military business. I still see lots of old East Atlanta.. Surpised you don't have the Old Starlight Drive-in.

Hey Larry,
I check your blog from time to time. I just love what you do! I'm an Atlanta native and there is still so much to discover about this town. I'll have to check out the Hollywood Cemetery. There's another one close by that I only drove past on Hwy. 78 just outside the perimeter. It looks really old too. Do you know that one?

My great grandparents are buried in Hollywood Cemetary and I was shocked and disgusted by the condition of that place. Thanks for the photos. The city or whomever owns that land should be ashamed of the condition! Where can I go to find their graves and who should I complain to about the condition of the place? How sad!

I also have a grandfather in this cemetery. As my son and I have researched the family, we were told not to visit this cemetery because of possible theft, violence, etc. Should you be able to get a group up to work on this to make it so that we can access and improve it, please let me know. Thanks for sharing -

I have been looking for my husband's uncle, Charles Cantrell, who was killed during WWII. I have been told he was buried at the Hollywood Cemetary, but the list of war dead buried there does not include his name. It would be interesting to visit and look. Is there a sexton office or other facility for locating graves? Is it a safe area to go to?
Your pictures are fascinating.
Thanks for taking the time,
Rosemary

I grew up in Atlanta, and many of my relatives are buried at Hollywood Cemetery. I haven't been to the cemetery since I was a small child, but I'm working on family history and would welcome the opportunity to visit there again. I'd like to know if/when you organize a cemetery friends group.

I was wondering if you had any information from your picture # 00086 - the monument says Landers. My great grandparents were Landers and buried in Hollywood Cemetery, we recently learned their names were John Crocket Landers and Mary Edna Landers. If you have any further info, please let me know! Thanks! Val

I understand my grandfather and his parents are buried in Hollywood Cemetery. In trying to get information about them, I discovered that the Hollywood Cemetery records are now at Lincoln Cemetery. I was told that Hollywood is in disrepair and that it would be unsafe to go there. Thanks for your interest and photos.

I have been working on Hollywood Cemetery for the past four years or so, trying to document every person who is buried there. Some of the people named in previous messages are listed there. If you go to www.findagrave.com, you will see 3,387 names listed there. I have also started a "Hollywood Tree" which will be available on Ancestry.com. By doing it, I am able to link many family members together, helping people to find more of their ancestors.
Please know that you can go to Hollywood Cemetery. It is in a declining area. You need to be aware, but I am an older woman and have never been bothered there and have been there many, many times. It is best not go to alone, if you go into the wooded areas, though. It is best to go during cooler/colder weather as the vines have died down and any varmits are hopefully asleep. It is easier walking then, too.
If you have relatives at Hollywood that are not listed, please contact me so that I can add them and keep track of them. My email address is on findagrave.

Trying to figure out where our family members might be buried as it is close to this area.

I have just discovered that I have relatives buried in Hollywood cemetery. I have found the people at the office of very little help. I do know the lot number where my family memebers are buried, but I do not know how to locate the actual site. Do you have a map of the cemetery or any idea of the order the lots are in?
Thanks for your time.

i think it would help a lot of people to know that hollywood cemetery seems to be known as & by 3 different names (possibly) or that there are 2 cemeteries together, named hollywood, & maybe magnoliia ? i called a number (404)792 2220. they answer "lincoln & montevista cemetery"..the lady at that # said that lincoln & montevista owns the 2 cemeteries now. true or not, i don't know. i know my father, gr'mother, grandfather & my gr g'mother are all 4 buried at the magnolia, which i'm told is the south end of the hollywood cemetery. i guess i'll have to go over there & see.

Hi,
I have family (Bohler, Wall, Lammons) in Hollywood Cemetery and have been wanting to go to check the condition. My parents went until it was just too dangerous. I would like to be a part of the restoration committee. It looks like it would take a lot of heavy equipment to get it done. What city is it in? East Point? Thanks for all your work.

My husband and I went to Hollywood Cemetery today and I found my family plots. Not is good shape but, not as bad as some. Needs a lot of cleanup. We met Tracie (above blog) there. She wasn't going to get out of her vehicle until she saw us. She did not find her family while we were there. She was going to the Lincoln office. Tracie, hope you got some good info on your family.

Needing to get home before the school bus prevented me from stopping by the office Wednesday, but I plan on going back next week.
I've started a blog about Hollywood Cemetery so we can all communicate and get all of our information in one place:

I think the time for action is now.

The problem that all old cemeteries have is that nobody owns them. The City of Atlanta does not own any cemetry except Oakland and they do not maintain it. This is done by volunteers. All who have relatives in this cemetery need to get together and form an association to care for it. East View in Kirkwood has done so, West View in East Point has done so and Hopewell has done so in Tyrone, GA I am part of all three.

We have family buried at Hollywood. I have picures taken at a funeral but am not sure who it is. I am going to look at the findagrave website and see if I can find them. Dear Larry,
I m doing some research on Chattahoochee Brick Company, now General Shale over off Parrott Avenue. I have documents indicating deaths while convicts were interred there. Management claims to have buried them at Westview Cemetery, but it would seem that Hollywood would have been closer, and more esily reachable via the Riverside trolley.
Do you know if there were any burials from CBC there, or if there were any collective burial sites- like a potter's field -- there? The relevant dates would have been 1878 to 1909.
Also, do you know anything about an amusement park/recreation area that was supposed to have existed out in Riverside? Is there any documentation of it? BTW what was the terminus of the Riverside line? Do you know?
Thanks for any help that you might give me re these questions.
Best,

You won't believe how timely your post is :-) I'm researching the stretch of the Chattahoochee from the Clayton Plant to Nickajack Creek. So what if anything is going on with the clean-up of Hollywood Cemetery and/or the formation of an association of families to care for it? I recently learned that I have some family there. The pictures and description of the cemetery "management" I've seen make finding the grave sites sound doubtful at best.

A note for Pendy (above):
I've recently found and photographed several Cavaleri graves at Hollywood Cemetery. They can be viewed at the Findagrave.com Website.
I think I recorded five graves. Most of the grave markers were buried under a few inches of dirt and leaves.

Hi Pendy:
Thanks for the link. I read and enjoyed the memoir from Ernesto Emilio Cavaleri. He was a deacon at St Paul Methodist Church in Grant Park about 100 years ago. I'm now a member of that church.
I just happened to be at his grave a few days ago while mapping some of Hollywood Cemetery. Turns out that the N-S line from the top of the cemetery hill goes through the middle of the Cavaleri plot.
