Yesterday I posted three different youtube versions of the Tom Paxton song "Last Thing on My Mind". I've decided that this is a fun format for presenting songs that have been performed by a variety of artists, and I've decided to do one song per day.
Today's song is Si Me Quieres Escribir, from the Republican (anti-Fascist) partisans in the Spanish Civil War. The anti-Franco forces for whom this song was written were beaten decisively, but generated some of the best political songs ever written. As Tom Lehrer wrote in his parody Folk Song Army, "He (Franco) won all of the battles, but we had all the good songs". Si Me Quieres Escribir is set in Gandesa, in the Catalan region, where the 1938 Battle of Ebro took place. It's a beautiful and rousing song.
